Four types of sound production

The small screen to the left of the glass cabinet shows in detail the four different ways of sound production.

Aerophones

The sound of the instrument is activated by air.

Membranophones

The sound is produced by a vibrating membrane that is stretched across a hollow chamber.

Idiophones

The sound is produced by the instrument as a whole vibrating; not using a string or a membrane.

Chordophones

The sound is produced by vibrating strings.
